Project Description

Jalal Hawari is a principal research environmental scientist spent 30+ years to ensure that water, air and soil meet quality standards suitable for a healthy living.  He obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry from University College London, UK then joined the National Research Council (NRC), Ottawa to work on nanosecond laser photochemistry.  Later he joined the Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI), Montreal.  His research is focused on Environmental sciences and engineering, environmental biotechnology and nanotechnology to solve problems related to petroleum, mining, energy, and water industry.  He holds 7 patents on environmental remediation and the conversion of biomass waste to biobased chemicals. He is the author of 320 publications; 104 technical reports, and 200+ presentations.  He supervised 51 MSc and PhD students, PDFs and research scientists, lead 64 projects, and co-authored a book on ecotoxicology. He is/was adjunct professor at several universities including McGill, Sherbrook, Ecole Polytechnique Montreal, Concordia, and UQAM.

He received research funding from US and Canada.  He obtained the 2011 TTCP Scientific Achievement Award (Canada, US, UK, NZ & Australia); 1998, 2002 and 2008 Institute DG awards (BRI-NRC), 2002 and 2006 ONR US Navy research awards; 2005 Frances Beaupré TTCP Award, U.K.; 2004 ACS Excellence in Review Award; 2002 and 2004 NRC-CANADA Outstanding achievement awards; 2003 US SERDP- project of the year award; 2002 Golden Jubilee Medal-Queen Elizabeth II award; 1998 Best paper award, 29th ICT, Germany. He was nominated for the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Canada Award (2016). His research was featured in a book titled “Arab Scientists in US and in Canada (2012) and by Aljazeera (2002, Maw’ed fi Almahjar).

He is a reviewer for several journals including Nature, ACS, PNAS, BBRC, PlosOne, ES&T, AEM, Wat Res, AC, and  sat in several committees including: Canada  Research Chairs; Concordia Institute for Water, Energy and Sustainable Systems; Greening Thermoplastics with Lignin Workshop, Montreal; Biomass Program Peer Review Panel, US DoE, Washington; Ontario Bioauto Council Discussion Group, Windsor; Lignin platform in bio composites and bioenergy, ORNL, TN, US; EPA 8330B Method for applications in Risk Assessment, VA, US; NRC  strategic planning: Science Leaders at Work for Canada; Water Environmental Research Foundation, CA, US.
